The size of the fin is of major importance: your fin is your propeller... It transmits the energy captured by the sail and generates a push that propels your board forward. For the propulsion principle to work well, your sail/board / fins’ suitability must be perfect!
This fin selector has been developed to help users choosing the right fin length depending on the sail size and type of board they use.
The maximal board width being the value considered to suggest different fin lengths. These tables were developed for slalom, race and free ride fins and consider the evolution of these different disciplines in the last two years.
The choice of the fin length depends on your sailing style and on your personal preferences. Do you like to sail over or under powered? Is the wind consistent or gusty ? Do you wish to have good upwind performances? All these parameters are influencing the ideal fin size.
The fin length we specify is valid for both freeride and slalom fins. Freeride fins are more easily kept under control and easier to jibe, whereas slalom race fins bring more support and have a greater speed potential.
Fin Calculators are based on matching sail sizes and board specs together but should take into account the variables below.
General factors
This calculator suggests fin lengths for both FreeRide and Slalom styles. As you make your choices. Please bear in mind that although Slalom fins give great support and speed that Freeride foils are easier to control and jibe.
• Red Digits indicate intermediary lengths for Freeride and Slalom shapes – so be sure to make adjustments based on your personal preferences.
Fin length / Board width
We’ve monitored board evolution over the past few seasons and, for Slalom and Freeride use, we recommend using board width to assist in choosing optimal fin length.
Ability & Preference related factors
Do you like being powered-up ?
Are you struggling to keep upwind ?
Perhaps you prefer maneuverability and comfort to top speed ?
In gusty, fluky conditions do you prefer to be comfortable in gusts and under-powered in lulls, or overpowered in exposed water but controlled in the holes ?
